Even if the high entry prices will initially put the brakes on buyers, as analysts say. Gartner expects around 30 million units to be sold in 2023, meaning that folding devices would make up around five percent of the premium segment. Gartner expects more foldable smartphones with a different form factor in the medium term. The prognosis is that manufacturers will be more willing to experiment here.

Instead of bathroom selfies and skydive photos, the so-called "Refrigerdating" to pictures of the inner workings of the domestic refrigerator. The hope: because you are what you eat, picture book vegetables, beer cans or nibbled sandwiches reveal just as much about your character as key data on your career and life mottos.

However, the app only works with a smart refrigerator from the manufacturer Samsung, which shows its contents on a built-in display in the door.

Lidl has launched the Samsung Galaxy A5 today, a smartphone model from the previous year. The price sounds tempting. But is it still worth buying?

The discounter offers the mid-range smartphone for 222 euros, which is only slightly cheaper than many online retailers. The model was first launched in 2015 and was completely reissued in 2017 together with the A3 and A7. The smartphone was originally launched at a price of 429 euros. You can learn more about this in this article.

The mobile phone offers solid mid-range equipment: 5.2 inch display (13.22 cm) with full HD resolution and a water and dust-proof housing made of glass and metal. The latter is rarely found in the lower price range.

Good, up-to-date smartphones are usually only available from 300 euros. For older models like the Samsung Galaxy A5, however, you can always find attractive offers.

Buyers have to compromise on performance and camera. With two simple 16 megapixel lenses on the front and back, the mobile phone does not offer the sophisticated photography options of a top smartphone.

The Exynos 7880 processor and three gigabytes (3 GB) of RAM should be sufficient for most everyday tasks. The processor speed is given as only 1.9 GHz. So you shouldn’t overwhelm your cell phone. The internal storage space is 32 GB and can be expanded to 256 GB via microSD. The 3,000 mAh battery is also more than adequate and ensures long runtimes.

The phone is sold with Android 8 (Oreo). It is unclear whether it will get the update to Android Pie. However, buyers shouldn’t put too much hope in it. It could well be that you will have to be content with the old operating system in the long term.

For almost 80 euros more, the mobile phone market offers many current alternatives with significantly more attractive features. Due to the low price, the cell phone in the Lidl branches could be sold out quickly. Interested parties can also order the smartphone in the Lidl online shop.

Samsung already has a whole range of tablets in its range, in different price ranges. The devices are mobile, but so far all work on Google’s Android platform. With the Galaxy Tab Pro S, the Koreans are daring to use a professional tablet with Windows as the operating system for the first time in a long time.

Samsung is competing against Microsoft’s Surface Pro – but also against Apple’s iPad Pro. All three devices belong to the still young business class, with display sizes from twelve to 12.9 inches (30.5 to 32.8 cm).

Thinner than Microsoft’s Surface

The thin case of the Tab Pro S is remarkable. With a thickness of 6.3 millimeters, it clearly undercuts the Surface Pro, and the iPad Pro by 0.7 millimeters. In terms of weight, the South Koreans are also just under 100 grams below Microsoft’s specifications. Samsung specifies the battery life as a little over 10 hours, and the discharged 5,200 mAh battery should be ready for use again within two and a half hours.

Under the Super AMOLED display, which has a resolution of 2160 × 1440 pixels, works an Intel Core M, the latest generation of Skylake processors. Trimmed for mobility, it clocks at 2.2 GHz, but is limited to two cores. Overall, the performance is on the same level as the Surface Pro 4 in its weakest configuration.

Tab Pro S also planned as an LTE version

As is common in the business class, the Tab Pro S can be used with a dockable keyboard as a laptop or without a keyboard with the touch-sensitive screen as a tablet. Unlike the top dog Microsoft, the keyboard cover is already included with the tablet.

Samsung has not yet given any information about the price. At the CES, however, rumors are circulating that the cheapest variant costs around 1000 euros, i.e. on a par with the competition. Two versions in black and white are planned for the market launch in spring, optionally with 128 GB or 256 GB SSD storage. There is also an LTE model so that the Internet connection does not break while working on the go.

In addition to the main camera with 24 megapixels (MP), a 10 MP telephoto, an 8 MP wide-angle and a 5 MP camera for depth of field effects are installed. The software identifies the subject and is supposed to get the best out of the photo by optimizing the scene. There is also a 24 MP selfie camera on the front.

In terms of other features, the smartphone with a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen (1080 x 2220 pixels) is in the upper middle class. The A9 is powered by the Snapdragon 660 processor, and the RAM is 6 gigabytes (GB). The built-in memory of 128 GB can be expanded by a maximum of 512 GB with a micro SD card. The Samsung Galaxy A9 is available from November in three different colors for just under 600 euros.

Two cameras are not enough? Samsung’s newly introduced smartphone Galaxy A7 has three lenses on the back. So far, such a configuration is more familiar from Huawei with the upper-class P20 Pro model.

Together with Samsung’s scene optimization software, even better photos should be created. The selfie camera of the A7 also has a resolution of 24 MP, an adaptive LED flash and masters the currently popular bokeh effect with portraits in front of a blurred background. There are also light filters, AR emojis or beauty filters.

Technically, the Galaxy A7 is in the upper midfield of the current standard: It has a 6-inch Amoled display (1080 to 2220 pixels), an eight-core processor, either 4 or 6 gigabytes (GB) of RAM and a maximum of 128 GB of integrated memory, depending on the region – A further 512 GB are possible via SD memory card. For the December issue of the magazine "test" Stiftung Warentest tested 15 tablets in various sizes. In order to have fun surfing the net, playing games and watching films, the display quality has to be right. But it is precisely here that there are great differences in quality.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 in detail

The best devices scored with good colors, high resolution and strong contrasts. At the other end of the scale, however, there were also downward outliers: Tablets that displayed images blurred and pixelated and that texts were difficult to read.

Small models are good for traveling

The testers differentiated between small devices with diagonals between 6.8 and 8.4 inches and larger tablets with 8.7 to 10.9 inches. The size also depends on the intended use: Those who travel a lot with their tablet tend to choose a smaller model that is also lighter. If the device is to be used primarily at home, it can also be larger.

While the decision on the operating system between Android and iOS remains essentially a question of faith, the Windows system falls behind the other two systems mainly because of the much smaller selection of apps, according to the testers. Some Windows programs are only available as installation files. Then users would have to switch to desktop mode on the tablet: But this is small-scale and difficult to operate using touch.

Camera quality mostly mediocre

According to the testers, there are big differences in battery life: the weakest devices lasted seven hours, the best tablets lasted twice as long. The cameras were disappointing: only one tablet made it into this category "Well"who have cut other tablet cameras "satisfying" or just "sufficient" from.

If you don’t just want to surf in WLAN networks while on the move, you should pay attention to a SIM card slot, advise the product testers. But not all devices have that on board. Manufacturers often offer versions of their tablets with and without a cellular modem. If you can do without it, you can save up to 120 euros with the slimmed-down version. However, experienced users are not completely cut off: In an emergency, an additional smartphone can be used to connect to the network via a mobile (Android) or
